National Windrush Monument
On 22nd June 2022 – ‘Windrush Day’ – the National Windrush Monument, which was created by Jamaican born artist Basil Watson, was unveiled at London Waterloo Station by two Windrush pioneers, Alford Gardner and John Richards, in the presence of The Prince and Princess of Wales. The Monument stands close to platform 19 where I arrived from Trinidad sixty-two years earlier, aged ten. Thousands of other Caribbean people also arrived at Waterloo Station between 1948 and 1971 before dispersing to cities across Britain.
